Behind the Scenes: Mapping Mnemosyne

This past week I had the opportunity to facilitate the setting up of our latest exhibition MAPPING MNEMOSYNE: Where am (I/WE/YOU)? It was genuinely a wonderful experience talking to the curator, Artemis Herber.

Being able to just peer into the world of curating exposed my eyes to what it takes to make an exhibition. Lighting, positioning, how art is displayed, and how they all factor into how we as the audience perceive art. It is a delicate, patient process. If one light is misplaced, the piece can look dull, or even the shadow can obscure another piece. This also requires a lot of problem-solving, coming up with unique solutions that each piece requires. Curation represents an art within itself, examining and being able to utilize a space to convey a message.

I am so grateful for being able to see the effort reflected by the curators and the Mnemosyne Initiative artists. Through the set-up of this exhibition, everyone here at the Julio Art Gallery, including myself, hopes that you can see and feel the labor of love that is this exhibition.

The exhibition is currently open and runs through November 17th. A celebratory reception will be held in the gallery on October 26 from 6-8PM. (All our programs are free and open to all!)
